Absolutely fun for new players. The loop is a bit grindy, but not in a malicious way that most grind games are (since this game doesn't have microtransactions). It is a light survival space exploration sim. At the beginning, you fix your first ship and get the basic tools to mine resources and explore.
VR is a mode in No Man's Sky - it's not a different version - so I would hope it works. I managed to play Subnautica in VR on Game Pass, though I only played for a few minutes and there were some elements that seemed sub-optimal. To the OP, haven't tried it on Game Pass as I already own it on Steam, but hopefully you get it working!

You may have a look into your windows Event Viewer for more Info about that crash. Open RUN (Win+R) and type : eventvwr.msc in RUN, this opens your Event Viewer. There expand Windows Logs and look under Application for warnings with a timestamp of that crash. #1.
